Description
Há dias ao efectuar um passeio a pé pela margem do rio Douro entre a Ponte de D. Louis I and the beach Areinho (Gaia) , passei num local que denominado Capela do Senhor de Além. It was with sadness that I saw the complete abandonment and the great degradation that reached this beautiful place, onde há uns anos atrás se realizavam piqueniques, celebrations with music and fireworks in honor of his holy. Two of this chapel bells were removed by the Parish of Santa Marinha (Gaia) akin to preserve them but the rest were simply stolen.
The history of this place is very interesting, showing the rivalry, even religious, existing between the inhabitants of both banks. Access to the ruins of Hospice and consequently Ware Factory was difficult, e até a maior parte das vezes impossível, devido à vegetação imensa que tomou conta deste local.

Historical Notes
In the year 1140, Bishop of Porto, D. Pedro Rebaldio, he built on the spot where now there is the Monastery of Serra do Pilar , a convent of nuns invocation to the holy St. Nicholas. During this construction was found an image of the Crucified Lord and to collect this image was built a chapel on the site where now there is the Chapel of Our Lord of Beyond.
In 1738, was also built in the same place a madhouse, Hospice of the Carmelites, which was situated opposite to that hermitage. In the following year, More precisely 05 March 1739, five Carmelite friars Shoes took care of that hospice which ran until the year 1832. Passados dois anos, this hospice was sold giving rise to a factory of china, Factory Dishes the Lord of Beyond.
In the year 1877, on the site of the hermitage, was then built the Chapel of the Lord of Beyond, evocando-se naturalmente o Senhor de Além, getting, however, esta capela sob a administração do episcopado do Porto. Later, when the monks of Grijo managed to build the current Monastery of Serra do Pilar, o Bispo D. Baltazar Clean ordered that images of S. Nicholas, S. Bartholomew and the Crucified Lord, were gathered in the chapel of Lord of Beyond.
Afim de acabar com as secas e inundações, including those that resulted in major flooding Rio Douro, were realized from this location by the river processions to the Foz do Douro. The annual festival is happening on the 1st Sunday of September. This site was very pleasant for the existence of sources and groves, and as he was by the river, was pleasing to many people who moved up there for their Sunday picnics.
Conflito religioso
As stated, For many years this chapel was given by the city of Porto. When we performed the “Processions of Prayers” that was often cited reasons behind the, EDIS portuenses the QUALITY of the administrators of the temple and of the brotherhood, went over there to get the image of the Lord of Beyond. it was also used in “Processions of Thanks”, as in 18 November 1755, Hair facto city of Porto have been spared the great earthquake that destroyed the city of Lisbon.
Now, whenever the camera was going over there to get the image of the Lord of Beyond, affine of the transport to the Cathedral of Porto, transportation was done with great solemnity and in which participated the Chapter (corporation canons) and the various confraternities of the city. At some point, where the image was kept in the Cathedral of Porto, the Chamber invited the canons to be present at another procession to return the image to the Lady Chapel of Beyond .
At the invitation, members understood that the Chapter should not walk to the orders of the aldermen and they had no authority to convene, so have left out the picture of the Cathedral. Then settled a conflict between the City and the members of the Chapter.
Perante such refusal, councilors initiated a legal process involving the Judge of the Crown and the Bureau of the Palace Justice that, a 22 November 1631, enviou um despacho favorável à Câmara, dizendo que os edis podiam levar a imagem mas de uma forma privada sem envolver qualquer procissão. This order did not resolve the impasse and 1646 the question remained as the principle, ie, the cross of the Crucified Lord only leave the cathedral canons when they wished.
As the conflict has never been remedied, a Câmara do Porto sempre que ia buscar o Senhor de Além ao outro lado do rio, instead of bringing it into the Cathedral, with was the tradition, started to lead him to the Chapel of S. Michael the Angel who was also managed by this Chamber. As the issue is not resolved, os devotos de Gaia resolveram então mandar fazer uma imagem do Senhor de Além igual à primeira e colocaram-na na Capela.
