Monastery of Santa Maria de SEICO

“Although it is not known the exact date of the monastery foundation Seiça, the oldest documented reference that is known about this monastery, situated along the river Mondego, data de 1162, in which the abbot Martin is present in the granting of exemption letter of episcopal rights given to Crosier, by Bishop D. Michael Solomon. A few years later, in 1175, D. Afonso Henriques Couto sends donation letter Bar D. Pelágio Egas (ou Pair Egas), Abbot of Santa Maria SEICO…”

“…In 1895 the Parish Board sold the Seiça Monastery to individuals and 1911 the monastery was sold again. The new owners have transformed the church of the monastery in plant rice husking, which will have finished its operations around 1976. In 2002 the Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça was classified as a Public Interest and 2004 celebrated the deed of purchase of the Seiça Monastery by the Municipality of Figueira da Foz.”

It's really a shame the state in which it is currently. As we enter and percorermos what little remains of this monastery, note the remains of different constructions in time and inhabitants.
