Description: Camões College; Industrial Institute; Commercial Institute
Typology: Educational building
Location: Coimbra
Date of Visit: 01-08-2021
In the neighborhood of Cumeada, in Coimbra, an abandoned building always caught my attention due to its magnificence and location on the edge of semi-detached family houses. At first I thought it would have been a factory but what was my amazement when an ISCAC poster featured an old photograph of this building and, after a search, I found that it was always a teaching place.
Started your story more than 100 year old, when the Colégio Camões functioned there, a private educational institution that gave its name to the street where this building is located.. In the years 60 started to house the Industrial Institute and in the following decade, o Commercial Institute.
It has been doomed to abandonment since the end of the years 90, in such a way that even the sculpture dedicated to Luís de Camões, that was in the room, moved to the neighboring square and can be appreciated by passersby again.

It is surprising how the Coimbra City Council has not yet paid attention to the dignification of the space where the Luís de Camões College was built.. As far as I think I know, The building, in almost all, belongs to the University of Coimbra and there will be (finally) course a project for your recovery, now as a university residence. At the rear, where now there are some disgusting prefabs and a canteen, there was a playground, which I remember well (I lived next door over the years 50-60 and went there to play). It would be important for the project to include the demolition of the marrachos and the return of that space to the inhabitants of the neighborhood.
The aforementioned space finally has a defined destination. It has now been announced that it will be recovered and converted into university residence, with expected completion dates and entry into the new activity at the end of 2025.
Out there past the 4 best years of my life, in an institution that, although small for the time, had a lot of talent. Recovery is never unaffordable, What begins to be unbearable is the negligence of a state that drowns us with unnecessary projects to the detriment of abandoning what they were never able to build.
